RE: Attraction Recommendation in TX & Attraction Question in NM

I enjoyed the Living Desert in Carlsbad, but I would not go there just for that.

RE: Awning lengths - any problems with the long ones?

My Jayco came with a 22' carefree awning installed. It has a center brace (to the coach only, not to the ground) and I do like it, but I feel that I refrain from setting it up as much as I might if it were a little smaller. Winds really scare me with this thing because it makes one heck of a sail. The Carefree definately needs that center brace to the coach. Other than fear of wind and not using it at times, it is holding up just fine.
Now a gripe about the install. The center brace is designed to be stowed on the side of the coach when the awning is rolled up. On my jayco, the center falls right where the furnace is, so mine will not stow and I have to put it inside a compartment. Jayco could have put the brace 6" off center and it would stow as intended.

RE: New Mexico State Park Question

New Mexico has the highest reservation fees ($10.50) I have ever encountered
That, my friend, is why I typically will not reserve a site at our state parks unless it is a holiday weekend. It is like paying for an extra night without electricity.

RE: New Mexico State Park Question

Did you check before you pulled into the site with a green tag? Every time that I have checked before, the camp host has not had a problem with me using the site multiple days if it is not reserved when I check with them before I park. This is with the understanding that I may be asked to move is someone makes a reservation for that site while I am there. Also, my experience is that they are not very good at changing the tags in a timely manner.

RE: Field Trip with the Forest Service

dave54,
I could not agree more. What I meant is that my meeting with district rangers will probably not have an impact on how things are handled in other forests in other states.

I met with rangers at the district level, so I would be surprised if there was any impact to the overall process.

RE: Field Trip with the Forest Service

Well, I feel that the meeting with the FS went extremely well. When I showed them the areas, they seemed as if they were unaware that they existed. They did not show any resistance to designating both as open to motorized dispersed camping. I hope to see this in one or more of the alternatives to the proposed action in the DEIS.

Field Trip with the Forest Service

The Forests across the nation are going through what is called the Travel Management Rule
The Travel Management Rule requires that forests designate a system of roads, trails, and areas open to motor vehicle use by class of vehicle and, if appropriate, by time of year. The rule also gives forests the option of designating motorized access to dispersed campsites and to retrieve downed big game. Once designated and published on a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM), motorized travel off the designated system will be prohibited.
One ouf our closest forests (Santa Fe) is taking the option to designate motorized access to dispersed campsites. They have released their proposed action and one of my favorite camp spots was omitted. I submitted a written comment during the scoping period and attended their public meetings. There they encouraged the public to meet with them in the field. I am doing just that in 2 days. I will let you know the outcome.
Anyway, I encourage you to get involved in this process where you camp on national forest land to ensure that oppertunities continue for boondocking on our public lands.

RE: Drawer Slide Sockets

After 6 years with my coach, these brackets have been failing on my 3 larger drawers too. I'll be looking to fix this too. What a timely thread for me.

I'm headed to Chama next week. We will be staying at Little Creel Resort. (In-laws going too so we are staying here because they have cabins) Hoping to see some color in the Aspen trees. NM state parks are nice and a good value. You will not be disapointed.
